How I absolutely swoon for the Lyell Spring collection. A concise collection of simple and sweet pieces, all of which are calling my name…

Arty films

March 9, 2007

The 25th annual Festival international du film sur l’art began yesterday, kicked off with the screening of the just completed Citizen Lambert: Jeanne d’architecture. It is a playful portrait of Phyllis Lambert, the doyenne of the Canadian architectural landscape, and at its 52 minute length, definitely watchable. I especially enjoyed the parts where she speaks of dressing in her youth, during her Vasser years, when she had couture dresses made to measure - wonder if her costume archive is as extensive as the architecture archive at the CCA?

I think I’ll be catching a few films over the course of the festival; they always have a very well rounded selection of docs. The programme this year runs the gamut from films on Warhol, the Chelsea Hotel, Mapplethorpe, and David LaChapelle to Rem Koolhaas, Danish artist Erik Frandsen and Krzysztof Kieslowski. Lots to keep one busy and entertained.

On a technical note: the layout was acting funny, so it has been temporarily changed.

Return of the bodysuit

I remember a time when bodysuits were au courant. Worn with perms, easy fit/tapered jeans, big southwestern silver belt buckles; they were somewhat inconvenient, but every girl had them. Against all odds, bodysuits seem to be slowly seeping back into our collective consciousness, and I even witnessed their praises sung by someone recently who described with enthusiasm the merits of wearing a white button down/bodysuit with suits (no more bunching of tucked in shirts!), and their inherent disadvantages (having to get down and fumble with the snaps). She was convincing, but then again, I rarely have occasion to wear a suit.

MiuMiu slipped one in to their show, one disguised as a tunic length cardigan with of course, crotch snaps for convenience -the crotch buttons however seem to be purely for show. Here the bodysuit is prominently displayed for full effect sans bottoms with some great sky high spectators. (The footwear was fabulous; I have so gone oxford crazy).

When faced with the gut-wrenching decision of choosing between Acne Hex Lena jeans or the Hug Clears, I chose the Lenas. The Hugs are certainly not a sexy cut in the conventional sense, but definitely are a particular look. I’m still into them, but in my gossip rag cruising (sure, I admit I occasionally indulge), I noticed that Lohan is into them as well. The cuff is a bad choice as is keeping the size tag on. Carrot jeans or Mom jeans? You decide. Whatever popular opinion might be, I still like them and would probably wear them quite often on grubby days (on the increase, as of late).  They definitely are a prickly and divisive style.

Come to me Spring

I was rejoicing at the thought of being able to wear nice shoes outside again - the streets and sidewalks were all clear save the west sides of north-south streets were the sun doesn’t shine during the day (that still had remnants of ice and yucky salt). But Mother Nature unleashed her will upon us once again and we are once more in the depths of winter. The daily ritual of toting good shoes to an fro and changing once inside is getting tedious and absurd -but grumbling about the weather is probably as tedious…

’s footwear however, is something to rejoice. A beautiful palette of prints and colours that exude such a bright Brazilian spirit! Something neat is a series of photos on her site showing the painstaking production process that results in such wonderful creations as my favourites of her s/s 2007 collection. Oh, how they make me wish for clear sidewalks.
